Mother’s Day/Father’s Day Drive-By Parade

The Heart of the ProjectSpreading love and joy to isolated seniors during the COVID-19 lockdown through festive, drive-by parades for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
Making It HappenVolunteers designed decorative signs featuring positive, uplifting messages alongside “Happy Mother’s Day” and “Happy Father’s Day” greetings. These signs, along with balloons, were displayed on vehicles that proceeded to drive past supportive living facilities, spreading joy and fostering celebration.
Who We ReachedSeniors residing in supportive living facilities who were separated from loved ones due to COVID-19 distancing measures.

The Heart of the ProjectCreated and delivered holistic wellness baskets to 350 seniors.
Making It HappenWith the support of the Edmonton Community Foundation, we partnered with Edmonton Meals on Wheels to provide and deliver holistic wellness baskets to their clients.

The Heart of the ProjectCare packages for seniors thoughtfully curated to include culturally mindful items, with a commitment to supporting Indigenous businesses.

Building Connections

Companion Calls Program

The Heart of the ProjectFostering connection and combating loneliness with meaningful phone call conversations. This project was inspired and mentored by Dr. Nabeela Nathoo and Dr. Omar Damji, who developed a program to call isolated seniors at home once a week. 
Making It HappenVolunteers make weekly calls to their assigned seniors, engaging in positive and meaningful conversations. 
Who We ReachedLocal seniors residing in a supportive living facility in southwest Edmonton. 
Bill and Mary were matched in 2021 and are going strong 4 years later. They both look forward to talking every Monday and Thursday, and enjoy talking about everything from Sports and current events to families and stories from the past. This match has been as good for Mary as it is for Bill and they both cherish their friendship.  They celebrate their anniversary every year with a breakfast together at Denny’s.

The Heart of the ProjectCreating a warm, inclusive space for seniors to connect and engage over tea, inspired by founder Meera Kassam’s experience at her local Ismaili Jamatkhana—a place of prayer and community where tea is often served after prayer ceremonies and meaningful connections are formed.
